Renting a bike in a hill station like Shillong is different from renting in Goa or a metro city. The terrain, weather, and traffic rules require specific knowledge. At Cloud City Wheels, we believe an informed rider is a safe rider. Here is everything you need to know about our pricing, policies, and suggestions.
1. Understanding the Deposit & Insurance
Many customers ask, “Why is there a security deposit?” The deposit (₹1,000 – ₹3,000 depending on the bike) acts as a safety net for minor damages like broken mirrors, bent brake levers, or deep body scratches that might occur during the trip.
- Refund Policy: The deposit is 100% refundable. We inspect the bike upon return in your presence. If there are no new damages, the amount is transferred immediately via UPI or returned in cash.
- Insurance: All our bikes come with valid Third-Party Insurance. However, “Own Damage” (damage to the rental bike itself) is the rider’s liability. We recommend riding carefully. In case of a major accident, the rider is liable for repair costs at the authorized service center (Royal Enfield/TVS).
2. Fuel Policy & Availability
We operate on a “Tank-to-Tank” or “Same Level” policy. This means if you receive the bike with 2 points of fuel, you return it with 2 points.
- Pickup: We usually provide the bike with 1-2 liters of fuel (enough to reach the nearest petrol pump at Police Bazar circle).
- Fuel Availability on Routes:
- Shillong to Cherrapunji: Plenty of pumps on the route. The last reliable pump is in Sohra market.
- Shillong to Dawki: Reliable pumps are in Pynursla (halfway). Fuel is scarce near the Bangladesh border, so we strictly advise tanking up at Pynursla.
3. Riding Gear & Luggage
Meghalaya weather is unpredictable. It can be sunny in Shillong and pouring rain in Cherrapunji 50km away.
- Helmets: We provide one ISI-marked helmet for free. A pillion helmet is mandatory by law in Shillong city limits. We rent pillion helmets for a nominal fee (₹50/day).
- Luggage Racks: Our Royal Enfield Classics and Himalayans come with rear luggage carriers suitable for bungee cords. We provide cords on request.
- Rain Gear: We strongly advise carrying a high-quality poncho or raincoat. We also rent raincoats if you forget yours.
4. Breakdown Assistance Policy
Our “21-Point Safety Check” minimizes breakdown risks. We check chain tension, engine oil levels, brake pad thickness, and tyre tread depth before every handover. However, machines can be unpredictable.
In City Limits (Shillong): If the bike faces a mechanical issue within 10km of our garage, our mechanic will reach you, or we will provide a replacement vehicle free of cost.
Remote Areas (Dawki/Sohra): In remote locations, we will guide you to the nearest mechanic via video call or phone. Major mechanical failures (engine/clutch) are on us. However, punctures are the rider’s responsibility. We ensure tyres are in top condition, but sharp stones on off-road trails can cause flats. Puncture shops are available in most villages along NH6.
5. Tips for Negotiating Shillong Traffic
Shillong has narrow roads and significant traffic during school hours (8 AM – 10 AM and 2 PM – 4 PM). Traffic rules here are strictly enforced.
- Lane Discipline: Do not overtake from the left. Traffic police are everywhere and fines are heavy.
- No Honking: Shillong has a silent traffic culture. Avoid excessive honking.
- Parking: Park only in designated spots. Police Bazar has multi-level paid parking lots. Do not park on the roadside as your bike may be clamped.
